Friday All Day, 12/10/2010 Therapilates Pilates for Pregnancy
Sherri Betz Taught by Sherri Betz, physical therapist and Pilates teacher and educator. This full day workshop will outline the changes that occur in the body during pregnancy, review guidelines for safely working with this population and provide exercises and principles for Mat and apparatus based work for each stage of pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Friday All Day, 12/10/2010 Turn with Ease: Mat and Reformer Sequences for Rotation *Less then 20 spots left.* Elizabeth Larkam, MS Ed The design of the Reformer encourages movement in the sagittal plane and the Mat and Reformer repertoire created by Joseph Pilates emphasizes spine flexion and extension. There are few opportunities in the conventional vocabulary to explore differentiated rotation of the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and pelvis. Learn to think and move 'outside the box' of the reformer and traditional mat exercises with safe, effective, functional movement sequences that facilitate the spine rotation necessary for powerful, efficient motor control. Whether your client's day requires backing the car into a parking place, lifting an infant up from the crib, serving a tennis ball or defending a soccer goal, this vocabulary is beneficial. Learn Mat exercises with and without props as well as 2 one-hour Reformer movement sequences. The first for the de-conditioned client with limited spine rotation does not require any additional props. The second sequence for the experienced client who is ready for increased movement complexity uses the ring, roller and rotator discs.
Friday All Day, 12/10/2010 Pilates for Men: Building Strength, Flexibility and Power *Less then 20 spots left.* Julian Littleford Joseph Pilates originally developed his method with men in mind. Reclaim the original intention of the work with Julian Littleford using the Pilates Arm Chair*, Reformer and other apparatus to develop upper body strength, improve flexibility and increase physical power through balanced muscle development and coordination. Julian will present traditional and contemporary Pilates exercises and variations for clients at all levels of ability.
*Arm Chair repertoire not provided as part of London curriculum.
Friday All Day, 12/10/2010 Pelvic Girdle Analysis and Pilates Program Design
Anna Maria Vitali This workshop is designed to clarify the structure and function of the Pelvic Girdle and its relationship to the Core and Lumbopelvic Stability. Detailed information on the anatomy, kinesiology and dysfunctions of the Pelvic Girdle as well as exercise guidelines for working with clients with low back pain, SI and pelvic dysfunctions will be presented on the Mat, Reformer, Cadillac and Chair. part 1 (Analysis) and part 2 (Exercises Guidelines)
Saturday Morning, 12/11/2010 Call it Choreography! - The Reformer
Valentin It’s all about the moves! Learn how to sequence “new” choreography and integrate it into the traditional Pilates repertoire. Practice the exercises and chain them together with smooth transitions to create flawless routines on the Reformer that can be used with private clients or in group sessions.
Saturday Morning, 12/11/2010 Mat for Motor Control, Stability and Balance *Less then 20 spots left.* Elizabeth Larkam, MS Ed Standing balance and locomotion are complex activities that challenge motor control in all planes of motion. Familiarity with conventional mat exercises may not address asymmetries in lateral translation, lateral flexion and rotation of the spine that can impede fluid movement. Learn safe, effective mat sequences that are functionally relevant to standing balance, walking and other forms of locomotion. Each exercise in the sequence integrates breathing with local core control and the global sling systems while connecting the eyes and feet with the pelvis and spine. These mat sequences that require non-habitual movement responses are designed to illuminate kinesthetic blind spots and re-awaken the delight of discovering new motor skill. Modification for clients with hip replacement, knee replacement and those who are not comfortable in supine are included. The first sequences presented do not use any equipment. Subsequent sequences use small apparatus to add degrees of freedom and challenge stability.
Saturday Morning, 12/11/2010 Spinal Mobility on the Mat and Reformer
Nora St John, MS Optimizing spinal mobility is a core principle in Pilates and as you progress through the levels spinal mobility becomes more and more challenging. Beginning with simple spinal flexion and extension, we will progress through rotation and lateral flexion to develop the balance, strength and coordination required to perform the advanced exercises safely. In this workshop we will experience ways to enhance spinal mobility using the Mat and Reformer.
Saturday Morning, 12/11/2010 EXO Chair Split Pedal: New Movements and Sequences for Group Classes *Less then 20 spots left.* Anna Maria Vitali The New Pilates EXO Chair with Split Pedals combines the strength and power of the traditional Pilates Chair work with the flexibility of resistance tubing to create a whole new workout. Anna Maria will introduce new sequences of Exercises that improve your range of motion. Stability, mobility, control, strength, flexibility and challenge are the themes of this workshop to create innovative Pilates group programming or personal training sessions.
Saturday Afternoon, 12/11/2010 The Foot Workout *Less then 20 spots left.* Kelly Kane The foot is our base of support as we move through our day and through our lives. As many Pilates practitioners know, many of our clients have feet issues. In this workshop we will look at the musculoskeletal anatomy of the foot and explore foot mechanics and pathomechanics in functional movement and the Pilates repertoire. We will manually identify the bones of the foot while learning basic mobilizations that can be integrated into any Pilates session. We will also explore a battery of foot stretches and strengthening exercises using balls, resistance bands, the Foot Corrector, Joe’s Toe Gizmo and the classical Pilates repertoire. Come learn how to cultivate happy healthy feet that will carry you and your clients through the rest of your life.
Saturday Afternoon, 12/11/2010 Pilates for Everyone: Progressions and Variations on the Reformer
Julian Littleford Learn new moves and challenging variations on the Reformer exercises from Master instructor Julian Littleford in this hands on workshop. Be prepared to work and learn as you experience Reformer work in a whole new way.
Saturday Afternoon, 12/11/2010 Functional Anatomy of the Shoulder
Chrissy Romani-Ruby, MPT, ATC In this 3 hour lecture, we will discuss not just the anatomy, but the function of the muscles and joints of the shoulder. Many dynamic relationships are needed to create normal healthy movement in the shoulder girdle and these can be encouraged with Pilates exercise. See how to evaluate these movements, identify the target muscle relationships and address them in your Pilates workout. Naming the muscles and their insertions/origins is not enough. In this lecture, you will learn how the muscles work in tandem and then focus on how to encourage these healthy relationships.
Saturday Afternoon, 12/11/2010 Unwind with Pilates
Jolita Trahan Muscular compensation due to sports (golf, tennis), dance, scoliosis or occupational habits (dentist, hairdresser) can often result in rotation of the axial skeleton. Jolita will address how to "unwind" with specific exercises on the apparatus and small equipment.
Sunday Morning, 12/12/2010 Call it Choreography! - The Pilates Chair
Valentin It’s all about the moves! Learn how to sequence “new” choreography and integrate it into the traditional Pilates repertoire. Practice the exercises and chain them together with smooth transitions to create flawless routines on the Chair that can be used with private clients or in group sessions.
Sunday Morning, 12/12/2010 Reformer for Osteoporosis *Less then 20 spots left.* Sherri Betz Learn and practice the best exercises on the reformer for the client with low bone density at risk for fracture! We will review general contra-indications and precautions as well as the latest developments in research on the effects of exercise on bone. Use the client’s Bone Mineral Density report to target the areas of lowest bone mass. Find out what you need to know to give a challenging and appropriate workout for the beginner or most experienced student of Pilates!
Sunday Morning, 12/12/2010 Pilates and the Foam Roller: The Perfect Combination for Muscle Balance *Less then 20 spots left.* Chrissy Romani-Ruby, MPT, ATC Muscle balance is one of the most important goals for injury prevention for athletes of any kind. Old or young, professional or recreational in any sport from Track and Field to Golf, the key to staying well is muscle balance. Pilates offers excellent techniques for creating matching muscle length and strength that is important for posture and healthy movement patterns. In this workshop we will cover several common imbalances in the hip and shoulder that can be balanced with the use of Pilates exercise on the foam roller. Excellent choreography for your group classes and for home exercise recommendations.
Sunday Morning, 12/12/2010 The Twisted Reformer: Understanding and Correcting Rotational Patterns on the Reformer
Nora St John, MS Learn to add rotational and unilateral exercises to your Reformer workouts to increase rotational strength for sports and daily activities and to balance or correct habitual patterns. You will learn techniques for assessing underlying rotational patterns using the functional footprints as well as variations on traditional Reformer exercises. Deepen you and your clients classroom experience while learning interesting moves to challenge clients at any level.
Sunday Afternoon, 12/12/2010 Inside Out: Pelvic Floor Health for Postural Support *Less then 20 spots left.* Kelly Kane The muscles of the pelvic floor have gained notoriety in the past few years in the Pilates community because they are part of the “core stabilizers” or “inner unit”. Yet it can be daunting to try and get our clients to understand what we mean when we say, “engage your pelvic floor” and even more daunting to be able to understand if they are doing it. In this workshop/lecture we will look at the anatomy of the pelvic floor and perineal muscles in detail. We will explore how to teach your clients to engage their pelvic floors and present real tools to assess whether or not they are engaging their pelvic floor and which part. We will also present exercises that highlight the pelvic floor and discuss why these muscles are so important for lower back health.
Sunday Afternoon, 12/12/2010 Pilates Cross Training for Dancers *Less then 20 spots left.* Elizabeth Larkam, MS Ed The Pilates Method has been associated with dancers ever since Joseph and Clara Pilates opened their New York Studio, attracting ballet and contemporary dancers for customized conditioning and therapeutic exercise. Now many pre-professional and professional dance education programs include Pilates mat and apparatus classes in their curriculum.
Learn movement sequences on the mat with small apparatus and in the Pilates studio that address significant aspects of dance technique including: alignment and strengthening of the feet for jumping and pointe work, control of hyper extension of the knee, strengthening external rotation of the hip joints, lumbo-pelvic stability, control of hyper mobility at the thoraco-lumbar junction, organization of the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle for carriage of the arms, and motor control for pirouettes. This workshop will include instruction in dance-specific applications of the Functional Footprints, Rotator Discs, Foam Roller, Magic Circle, reformer, chair with split pedal, trapeze table and barrels. DVDs of client studio programs demonstrating dance-specific movement sequences that prepare the dancer for class, rehearsal and performance will be included.
Sunday Afternoon, 12/12/2010 Advanced Pilates Mat and Variations
Julian Littleford Review the fine points of the advanced Pilates mat repertoire along with variations for enhancing your strength, flexibility and grace in this challenging workshop with Julian Littleford.
Sunday Afternoon, 12/12/2010 Reformer for Power: Butt, Legs and More Legs
Chrissy Romani-Ruby, MPT, ATC Whether you are recovering from an injury, attempting to get into shape, preparing for sport, or fighting age; having strong flexible legs is a goal. Everyone thinks of Pilates as a core workout, “butt” the core needs legs! In this workshop we will explore the many ways to incorporate leg focused exercise into your reformer workouts. This workshop includes multiple combinations on the jumpboard that are sure to encourage the perfect butt and legs.
