Wednesday/Thursday All Day, 9/1/2010-9/2/2010 SmartSpine™ Instructor Training *Less then 20 spots left.* Jennifer Gianni We know we need a well aligned spine to exercise, but how can we experience what optimal alignment really feels like? Enter the SmartSpine system created by master trainer Marie-Jose Blom to ease the biomechanical challenges of the spine during core exercises. The SmartSpine System consists of several pieces designed to help the body find it's most productive positioning. By supporting the skeletal and joint system in alignment, the neural system is retrained to recruit the deep muscles while releasing the overactive muscles. This virtual coach is the next best thing to having a teacher's guiding eye and touch at your constant disposal.
For the body, "feeling is knowing". SmartSpine creates the feeling for movement potential, reintroducing the natural rhythm of movement ease and fluidity. Taking the SmartSpine home is taking the tactile experience home, and reliving it in the body without instructional support. Components can be warmed in the microwave to help release muscles, and the optional organic Lavender scent calms the mind and increases focus. The SmartSpine will improve and guide movement through Pilates, Yoga, Feldenkrais and other mind body practices.
Those wishing to purchase the SmartSpine system may do so for a reduced rate at the conference.

Friday All Day, 9/3/2010 Body Reading: An Introduction to Visual Assessment
James Earls Visual Assessment of standing posture and movement serves all types of therapists. This workshop presents an introduction to building these skills with James Earls, Kinesis UK, a bodyworker and certified teacher of the Tom Myers' Anatomy Trains approach.
Bodyworkers can use accurate bodyreading to detect strain patterns that lead to pain patterns, often finding the 'key' at some distance from the obvious site of pain or injury. Pilates teachers can also use these skills to see where movement is not happening. BodyReading is both an art and a skill. This introductory workshop will demonstrate how you can build your abilities step-by-step beginning with reading the skeleton's relative position to seeing the soft tissue restraints involved in creating the position (using Anatomy Trains as a map), to formulating strategies for unwinding the problem. Often said to be 'unteachable', not only are these skills learnable, they are fun (you will never be bored at an airport again!) and immediately applicable to your manual or movement practice.
|
Friday All Day, 9/3/2010 Turn with Ease: Mat and Reformer Sequences for Rotation
Elizabeth Larkam, MS Ed The design of the Reformer encourages movement in the sagittal plane and the Mat and Reformer repertoire created by Joseph Pilates emphasizes spine flexion and extension. There are few opportunities in the conventional vocabulary to explore differentiated rotation of the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and pelvis. Learn to think and move 'outside the box' of the reformer and traditional mat exercises with safe, effective, functional movement sequences that facilitate the spine rotation necessary for powerful, efficient motor control. Whether your client's day requires backing the car into a parking place, lifting an infant up from the crib, serving a tennis ball or defending a soccer goal, this vocabulary is beneficial. Learn Mat exercises with and without props as well as 2 one-hour Reformer movement sequences. The first for the de-conditioned client with limited spine rotation does not require any additional props. The second sequence for the experienced client who is ready for increased movement complexity uses the ring, roller and rotator discs.

Sunday Afternoon, 9/5/2010 Mat for Motor Control, Stability and Balance *Only 9 spots left.* Elizabeth Larkam, MS Ed Standing balance and locomotion are complex activities that challenge motor control in all planes of motion. Familiarity with conventional mat exercises may not address asymmetries in lateral translation, lateral flexion and rotation of the spine that can impede fluid movement. Learn safe, effective mat sequences that are functionally relevant to standing balance, walking and other forms of locomotion. Each exercise in the sequence integrates breathing with local core control and the global sling systems while connecting the eyes and feet with the pelvis and spine. These mat sequences that require non-habitual movement responses are designed to illuminate kinesthetic blind spots and re-awaken the delight of discovering new motor skill. Modification for clients with hip replacement, knee replacement and those who are not comfortable in supine are included. The first sequences presented do not use any equipment. Subsequent sequences use small apparatus to add degrees of freedom and challenge stability.

Carolyne Anthony |
The Center for Women's Fitness |
Carolyne Anthony has been in the Dance, Fitness and Pilates world for over 30 years. She trained as a professional dancer in London, England in the late 1970’s. She obtained her teaching diploma in1982 and went on to dance professionally in Europe, Asia and Africa. She remains a member of the Royal Academy of Dancing and an Associate of The Imperial Society of Teacher of Dance. Carolyne was introduced to Pilates in 1983, at the prompting of her Jazz instructor. She found Alan Herdman and continued to learn from him until she left for the USA.
In the 80’s as a newcomer to the USA her focus turned to fitness as the aerobics boom began to hit. Carolyne certified with AFAA and the AEA as a group fitness instructor and went on to study the PACE ( people with arthritis can exercise) program. She put all this knowledge to good use as an instructor with the New England Health and Racquet Clubs.
While living in Connecticut Carolyne also joined the faculty of the Hartford Conservatory of Music and Dance, teaching ballet, jazz and pedagogy to the diploma students. She danced with the New England Dance Theater and helped found and became the Artistic Director of the Enfield Civic ballet Company. It was during this time that she became pregnant with her first child.
Carolyne was dismayed to learn that no matter how many certifications or diplomas she had acquired, nothing had given her any information on how to exercise during her pregnancy. Being too scared to do what she was doing, Carolyne opted to stop moving during the pregnancy. Finding herself with a unrecognizable body after the birth of her daughter, she busied herself with designing an exercise program that was both safe and beneficial for pregnant women. Her goal was to prepare the body for the birth, not just to be fit. Through the course of her next two pregnancies, Carolyne refined her skills and knowledge and today you have the highly successful Pre and post natal Pilates Specialist™ programs.
These programs and many of The Center’s workshops have been included in international conferences such as Body Mind Spirit and Pilates on Tour.
Carolyne works from a holistic point of view, seeing the body as an amazing instrument that needs the correct attention in order to work properly. Her efforts to make this possible for her clients has led her to study for her Masters in Natural Health, become certified as a Birth Doula and to learn other healing modalities . Currently Carolyne is a level two Reiki practitioner, Level 1 Myofascial release practitioner (John Barnes approach) and an Esoteric Healer. She is certified by Polestar, BasiPilates, the PMA and PhysicalMInd. Carolyne is on the faculty for Balanced Body University and is part of BasiPilates Advanced Education Course™.
Today TheCenter for women’s Fitness has 12 host studios around the world, 10 faculty members and more than 500 certified teachers teaching the method. The Center continues to expand.

Alan Herdman |
Alan Herdman Pilates
Allan Herdman studied at the London School of Contemporary Dance and was working as a teacher and dancer when, in the late 1960s, he was invited to New York to learn about the Joseph Pilates Method. There he worked intensively with Carola Trier and Bob Fitzgerald, two instructors who had been trained by Pilates himself. Although well-regarded amongst New York's dance fraternity, Pilates was unknown in the UK at that time and Alan returned in 1970 to set up Britain's first-ever Pilates studio. Among his first clients were actors, dancers and singers, but word soon spread as doctors and physiotherapists began recommending Pilates to patients struggling with chronic injuries.
Alan now lectures on Pilates around the world, and he has written several successful books, including The Pilates Directory (2004), The Gaia Busy Person's Guide to Pilates (2003) and Pilates: Creating the Body You Want (1999). He runs a training course for Pilates instructors and, as well as running his own studios, he and his assistants teach in dance schools and designated Pilates studios internationally. Pilates teaching staff at both Champneys Health Resorts and Shrubland Hall Health Clinic are personally trained by Alan Herdman.
