The Avalon System™: Evolutionary Pilates Equipment for the 21st Century
The Avalon System, created by Rael Isacowitz in conjunction with Balanced Body, represents the first new Pilates-based equipment. By redesigning and adding resistance to the arm chair, sitting box and spine corrector, Rael has extended the Pilates repertoire in new and exciting ways. Instructor: Rael Isacowitz

Core Conditioning: Integrated Functional Anatomy for the Optimal Pilates Program
This course is designed for Physical Therapists, healthcare professionals and Pilates instructors. Participants are instructed in functional anatomy and basic kinematics of the shoulder, pelvis, lower exteremities, trunk and spine. Differentiation of compensatory pattenrs of pelvic, scapular and spinal stabilizers while performing Pilates are reviewed with practical applications. In addition, a comprehensive review of the proper recruitment of the Inner Unit and the function of the Outer Unit is included. Emphasis is placed on the integration of these regions with core stabilization and the essential components.

Core Conditioning: Understanding the Leg and Hip
Review the anatomy and kinesiology of the hip, knee and ankle and learn to see and correct common misalignments.

Demystifying the Trapeze Table
The Trapeze Table or Cadillac is one of the most versatile pieces of Pilates equipment. It is invaluable for teaching the principles to beginning clients, working with post rehabilitation clients and challenging advanced students. In this full day workshop, you will learn exercise design and cueing techniques for a variety of clients. Six client cases will be presented together with their trapeze table programs. Polestar’s Precision in Assessment for the Pilates Teacher
This three hour mini-workshop is a compilation of excerpts from the new Polestar Critical Reasoning Series. Focus will be placed on appropriate decision making skills for comparable level of expertise. Dreyfus model of novice to expert will be introduced as the guiding model for scope of practice. Advanced postural assessment of the upper quadrant will be taught and practiced in the Polestar Fitness Screening framework. Interpretation of findings will be discussed and applied to program design.

Course Objectives: Participants will

  1. Be introduced to the Dreyfus and Dreyfus Model 1974 “Novice to Expert”
  2. Identify their own level of professionalism and scope of practice
  3. Learn advanced postural assessment tools for the upper quadrant including the scapula/thoracic and scapula/cervical regions.
  4. Apply new knowledge through the Polestar Fitness Screening
  5. Design programs based on appropriate scope of practice and new postural assessment tools.

Polestar’s Maximizing Functional Movement in the Upper Quadrant
This practical and made easy workshop will use the concept of joint congruency to enhance efficiency and functionality of the upper quadrant in the active adult. Most injuries to the neck and shoulder occur because of poor movement and posture strategy, referred to as the mechanism of the injury. Learn how to address common mechanisms leading to problematic shoulders, neck and head problems. Participants will learn basic assessment skills within a health model to improve these faulty movement and posture strategies using common Pilates exercises with their modifications. Instructor: Brent Anderson

Polestar’s Precision Focused Mat Class
Learn to apply precision in biomechanics as you take apart and re-examine a Pilates Mat class. The optimum biomechanics of the pelvis, thoracic spine and shoulder alignment as they pertain to enhancing Pilates movement will be examined. Instructor: Brent Anderson PhD, PT, OCS

Polestar's Open the GAIT!
This exciting three hour workshop will focus on basic visual and practical assessment of gait in the healthy population. Joint Arthrokinimatics, axial alignment, weight shifting, muscular and fascial slings will be discussed. A practical class combining mat and standing work will be incorporated to demonstrated the ability to influence a more efficient, safe and enjoyable gait.

Used in a logic harmonious with motor learning, props can improve the effectiveness of the original mat exercises, making them safe, accessible, effective and entertaining. Instructor Bios

Brent Anderson PhD, PT, OCS, Polestar Pilates
A licensed Physical Therapist and Orthopedic Certified Specialist for more than 13 years, Brent is a leading authority in performing arts medicine and Pilates-evolved techniques for rehabilitation. He founded and directs Polestar Pilates education, one of the world’s leading Pilates certification organizations. He lectures widely at national and international symposia and owns and operates two comprehensive Pilates conditioning and physical therapy centers that have become models for clinics and studios worldwide.

Mary Bowen, Pilates + Psyche
Mary Bowen, Pilates Elder, introduced PILATES + PSYCHE to the Pilates community six years ago, an evolution of her many years of teaching Pilates and practicing Jungian psychoanalysis. Mary worked each discipline separately for 20 years until “Gradually it was impossible not to see and address the whole person – both conscious and unconscious – as I taught Pilates.” Mary’s background in Pilates goes back 48 years; starting in 1959 with Joe and Clara followed by in depth study with Seed, 7 years with Bob Seed, Romana Kryzanowska, Kathy Grant, Bruce King, Jean Claude West and Christine Wright – all in New York City. Most remarkable, for 48 years Mary has taken a weekly private lesson in Pilates for herself which she regards as “a rare and rewarding accomplishment, achieved out of deep commitment to the transformative potential of the Pilates Method.”

Dawn-Marie Ickes MPT, Core Conditioning
Dawn-Marie Ickes, MPT holds a Master’s in Physical Therapy from Mount Saint Mary’s College. She is certified in Pilates and was elected to the first national board of Directors for the Pilates Method Alliance in 2001. As a both a physical therapist and a Pilates instructor, she teaches workshops on pediatrics, prosthetics and women’s health and develops training programs for health care professionals interested in integrating Pilates and rehabilitation.

Rael Isacowitz, MA, Body Arts and Science International (BASI)
Rael is a 25-year veteran of Pilates and recognized internationally as an expert in the field. He has taught extensively on five continents sharing a rich background in movement science, dance, athletics, yoga, and of course Pilates. Rael founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI) in 1989: one of the most respected comprehensive educational programs in the world. Rael developed the Avalon System, a new line of Pilates equipment with Balanced Body and recently released a series of DVD’s, an extensive collection of instructor training manuals and a popular book on Pilates. Rael is a passionate teacher who continues to deepen his practice of Pilates at every level.

Elizabeth Larkam, Western Athletic Clubs
In her 20 years as a Pilates professional, Elizabeth has designed programs for fitness, dance, sports, rehabilitation and academic settings. She is certified in Feldenkrais®, Gyrokinesis™, Gyrotonic® and the Franklin Method. Currently the Director of Pilates & Beyond for Western Athletic Clubs, Elizabeth directed the Pilates program at the Center for Sports Medicine at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital for many years. Elizabeth creates and presents workshops on Pilates related topics nationally and internationally and is known for staying on the cutting edge of Pilates programming.

Lolita San Miguel, Pilates y Mas
Ms. San Miguel is one of Puerto Rico’s leading cultural figures with a distinguished career in dance as a ballerina, educator, choreographer and artistic director. Born in New York City of Puerto Rican parents, Ms. San Miguel performed with Robert Joffrey and Benjamin Harkarvy and for ten years was a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Leaving the stage in 1968, Ms. San Miguel taught at leading dance companies in New York. In 1977 she moved to Puerto Rico and founded Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico’s finest classical ballet company. Ms. San Miguel has used the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning since 1958, and was trained and certified by both Carola Trier and Joseph Pilates. She is one of four “Distinguished Elders” of the Pilates Method Alliance and member of the Advisory Board of Pilates Style magazine.

Julian Littleford, J.L. Body Conditioning
British born Julian Littleford moved to San Diego in 1990 after spending 8 years as a principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where he worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov and the late Rudolf Nureyev. He was originally trained in the Pilates method in England by Alan Herdman and was one of Mr. Herdman’s original teachers in the late 1970s. In New York he worked for and trained with Deborah Lessen at Greene Street Studio. He is currently the Pilates director for the San Diego Padres baseball team.

Dallas Everleth, Balanced Body University
Dallas has been teaching Pilates since 1999 and currently owns Center Strength Pilates Studio, a Pilates and rehabilitation center in Berkeley, CA. Dallas is a Balanced Body University faculty member and has been teaching Anatomy in Clay nationally for the last 3 years. She studied Anatomy in Clay with founder Jon Zahourek in 2003.

Naomi Leiserson, Turning Point Studios
Naomi began teaching Pilates in 1993 at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. She is certified in Pilates through Core Dynamics in Santa Fe and holds additional certifications in Gyrotonic, Orthopedic Massage and the Franklin Method and studied Anatomy in Clay with founder Jon Zahourek. She applies her skills to clients with orthopedic injuries and uses anatomy to design effective programs for clients of all kinds. She is the co-director of the Pilates Instructor Training program at Turning Point Studios.

Gabrielle Shrier, Core Conditioning/BBU
Gagrielle Shrier graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology from UCLA and holds a Master's degree in Physical Therapy from USC. She is co-owner of Core Conditioning and is a PMA Gold Certified Pilates Instructor. She is also certified in Gyrotonic®. She has been practicing physical therapy since 1994 and has been a member of the APTA for over 10 years. Gabrielle has a strong background in education as she served as the continuing education director at Davies Medical Center and was a member of the continuing education committee for the Golden Gate District of the APTA. She spent the early part of her career specializing in neurologic disorders and is NDT certified. Additionally, Gabrielle practices Women's Health and CranialSacral Therapy. She has spent the past 3 years integrating Pilates and her background in physical therapy with her love of sports. She has been practicing physical therapy since 1994 and has been a member of the APTA for over 10 years.


Katy Taylor, RN, Taylor Wellness & Pilates, Inc.
Katy is a Registered Nurse of 32 years. She has completed her Advanced Certification in the Kathy Corey West Coast Pilates Method. She is the founder and President of Taylor Wellness & Pilates, Inc., Ft Wayne, IN and CO-owner of PS Pilates in Naples, FL where she is currently teaching. She has owned, operated and marketed numerous businesses.

Al Harrison, Balanced Body University
Al is the Education Director of Balanced Body University where he combines his experience in business, health and engineering to develop educational programs for Pilates instructors at every point in their career. With degrees in Electrical Engineering, Acupuncture and Business Administration, Al is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of small business people.
